Güllaç

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Güllaç is a traditional Turkish dessert typically served during the month of Ramadan. It is a light, milk-based dessert made from layers of thin, unleavened rice dough, milk, rose water, and often garnished with pomegranate seeds and walnuts.

Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]

The main ingredients of güllaç are rice flour, water, milk, sugar, rose water, and optional garnishes such as walnuts and pomegranate seeds. The rice flour and water are combined to create a thin, unleavened dough, which is then baked until it becomes translucent. This dough is known as güllaç leaves.

To prepare the dessert, güllaç leaves are soaked in milk and sugar until they become soft. They are then layered in a dish, with each layer being sprinkled with rose water and garnished with crushed walnuts. This process is repeated until all the güllaç leaves have been used. The dish is then refrigerated for a few hours to allow the flavors to meld together. Before serving, the güllaç is often garnished with pomegranate seeds for added flavor and visual appeal.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Güllaç holds a special place in Turkish cuisine and is particularly associated with the holy month of Ramadan. It is often served during Iftar (the meal that breaks the fast) due to its light, refreshing qualities. The dessert's use of rose water and pomegranate seeds also gives it a symbolic significance, as these ingredients are often associated with paradise in Islamic culture.
