G.I. Joe
G.I. Joe is a line of action figures produced by the toy company Hasbro. The original 12-inch (30 cm) line introduced on February 2, 1964, centered on realistic action figures. In the United Kingdom, these are often referred to as "Action Man". In 1982, the line was relaunched in a 3.75-inch (9.5 cm) scale complete with vehicles, playsets, and a complex background story involving an ongoing struggle between the G.I. Joe Team and the evil Cobra Command which seeks to take over the Free World through terrorism.
History[edit | edit source]
The G.I. Joe brand has evolved over time. From its start as a licensed 12" (30 cm) military-themed line in the 1960s, it has been relaunched in the 1980s with an integrated storyline that positions the G.I. Joe Team against Cobra, an evil organization led by Cobra Commander. The brand is promoted through various media including TV series, comics, and films.
G.I. Joe Team[edit | edit source]
The G.I. Joe Team is the code name for an elite special mission unit operating under the control of the United States military. Its purpose is to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.
Cobra Command[edit | edit source]
Cobra Command is the fictional nemesis of the G.I. Joe Team in the Hasbro action figure toyline G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and the Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing comics. Cobra was first introduced during the launch of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline in mid-1982.
In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]
G.I. Joe's appeal to children has made it an American icon among toys. The G.I. Joe franchise has expanded over the years to include comic books, animated series, video games, and films.
