GISSI
GISSI (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell'Infarto Miocardico) is an Italian group of researchers and clinicians focused on studying the survival rates in myocardial infarction patients. The group was established in 1984 and has since conducted several large-scale, randomized clinical trials that have significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of heart disease.
History[edit | edit source]
The GISSI was formed in 1984 by a group of Italian cardiologists and researchers. The group's primary aim was to investigate the survival rates of patients suffering from myocardial infarction, a type of heart disease that occurs when blood flow decreases or stops to a part of the heart, causing damage to the heart muscle.
Research and Impact[edit | edit source]
The GISSI has conducted several large-scale, randomized clinical trials that have significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of heart disease. These trials have led to the development of new treatment strategies and have influenced international guidelines for the management of myocardial infarction.
One of the most significant trials conducted by the GISSI was the GISSI-Prevenzione trial, which investigated the effects of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E on the survival rates of myocardial infarction patients. The results of this trial have had a significant impact on the treatment of heart disease worldwide.
Future Directions[edit | edit source]
The GISSI continues to conduct research and clinical trials aimed at improving the survival rates of myocardial infarction patients. The group's current research focuses on the role of genetics in heart disease and the development of new treatment strategies.
