Gabriel's Message is a traditional Basque Christmas carol about the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary by the Archangel Gabriel. The carol is also known as The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came.

The carol originates from the Basque country and was translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould in the 19th century. The original Basque text is known as "Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen," which translates to "The young virgin was there."

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

The English version of the carol begins with the following lines:

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; "All hail," said he, "thou lowly maiden Mary," Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

The lyrics recount the story of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary to announce that she will conceive and become the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
