Garrett Reisman

Garrett Reisman (February 10, 1968) is an American engineer and former NASA astronaut. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and raised in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey. Reisman is a recognized expert in the field of space exploration and has contributed significantly to the development of human spaceflight.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Reisman was born on February 10, 1968, in Morristown, New Jersey. He grew up in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey, where he attended Parsippany High School. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. He went on to earn a Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

NASA career[edit | edit source]

Reisman joined NASA in 1998 as part of the 17th group of NASA astronauts. During his time at NASA, he flew on two Space Shuttle missions, STS-123 and STS-132, and spent three months on the International Space Station during Expeditions 16 and 17. He performed three spacewalks during his career, totaling over 21 hours outside the spacecraft.

Post-NASA career[edit | edit source]

After leaving NASA in 2011, Reisman joined SpaceX as the Director of Crew Operations. In this role, he was responsible for the development of the Dragon 2 spacecraft, which is designed to carry humans to the International Space Station. He left SpaceX in 2018 but continues to serve as a Senior Advisor.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Reisman is married to Simone Francis, an environmental lawyer. They have one son together.

Reisman has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to space exploration, including the NASA Space Flight Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
