Generation

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Generation is a term used in both general language and in various fields such as biology, physics, and sociology. In its most basic sense, a generation refers to a group of individuals born and living contemporaneously. In a broader context, it can also refer to the entire body of individuals born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively.

Biology[edit | edit source]

In biology, a generation is a stage or degree in the succession of natural descent. It is a group of individuals derived from a common parent or parents and constitutes a single step in the line of descent. This can be further divided into different types such as sexually reproducing organisms and asexually reproducing organisms.

Physics[edit | edit source]

In physics, generation refers to the production of a form of energy or matter. For example, in a nuclear reactor, the term generation can refer to the production of heat or electricity.

Sociology[edit | edit source]

In sociology, a generation is a group of people born around the same time and raised around the same place. People in this "birth cohort" exhibit similar characteristics, preferences, and values over their lifetimes. There are several recognized generations in sociology such as the Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials.
