Gentioux-Pigerolles

Gentioux-Pigerolles is a commune in the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in central France. It is located in the Massif Central, a highland region in the middle of southern France.

Gentioux-Pigerolles is situated in the southern part of the Creuse department, bordering the Plateau de Millevaches natural regional park. The commune is characterized by its hilly terrain, dense forests, and numerous streams. The highest point in the commune is the Puy de Gentioux, which stands at 919 meters above sea level.

History[edit | edit source]

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with several megaliths and other archaeological sites found in the vicinity. The commune was officially established in 1790, during the French Revolution.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the latest census, the population of Gentioux-Pigerolles is approximately 500. The commune has experienced a steady decline in population since the mid-20th century, largely due to the rural exodus.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with livestock farming and forestry being the main industries. There is also a small tourism sector, with visitors attracted to the area's natural beauty and historical sites.

Landmarks[edit | edit source]

Among the notable landmarks in Gentioux-Pigerolles is the Monument aux Morts, a war memorial that is unique in France for its pacifist inscription. There are also several well-preserved traditional stone houses in the commune, as well as a 12th-century church.
