Geoid is the hypothetical shape of the Earth, conceived as a mean ocean surface extended continuously across the continents at mean sea level. It is an equipotential surface of the Earth's gravity field, which means that the direction of gravity at every point on the geoid is perpendicular to the surface. The geoid is a crucial concept in geodesy and geophysics, serving as a reference surface from which to measure the elevations and depths on Earth. Unlike the simpler mathematical Earth models, such as a sphere or ellipsoid, the geoid is irregular and complex, closely reflecting Earth's heterogeneous mass distribution and the gravitational forces resulting from this distribution.

Understanding the Geoid[edit | edit source]

The geoid's shape is influenced by various factors, including the Earth's rotation, the distribution of mass within the Earth, and external gravitational influences. It varies from the perfect ellipsoid due to irregularities in Earth's density. These irregularities cause the gravitational force to vary at different points on Earth, which in turn affects the shape of the geoid. The geoid undulates relative to the reference ellipsoid, with deviations ranging up to plus or minus 100 meters.

The geoid is of paramount importance in geodesy, as it serves as a global reference surface for measuring point elevations on Earth.
