George Albert Smith
George Albert Smith (April 4, 1870 – April 4, 1951) was an American religious leader and the eighth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He served as president from 1945 until his death in 1951.

George Albert Smith was born on April 4, 1870, in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, to John Henry Smith and Sarah Farr. He was a grandson of George A. Smith, an early leader in the LDS Church. Smith grew up in a devout Latter-day Saint family and was deeply influenced by his religious upbringing.
Church Service[edit | edit source]
Smith was called to serve as an Apostle in the LDS Church on October 8, 1903, at the age of 33. He was ordained by Joseph F. Smith, who was then the president of the church. As an apostle, Smith was involved in various church activities and was known for his dedication to missionary work and welfare services.
President of the Church[edit | edit source]
Smith became the president of the LDS Church on May 21, 1945, following the death of Heber J. Grant. His presidency was marked by efforts to expand the church's welfare program and to strengthen its international presence. He was also known for his emphasis on personal spirituality and adherence to church teachings.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
George Albert Smith married Lucy Emily Woodruff on May 25, 1892. They had three children. Smith was known for his kind and gentle demeanor, as well as his commitment to helping others. He suffered from various health issues throughout his life, including poor eyesight and chronic illness, but remained active in his church duties.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Smith passed away on April 4, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on his 81st birthday. He was succeeded by David O. McKay as president of the LDS Church. Smith is remembered for his compassionate leadership and his contributions to the welfare and missionary programs of the church.
