George Busk (12 August 1807 – 10 August 1886) was a British surgeon, zoologist, and paleontologist. He is best known for his work in the field of marine biology and for his contributions to the study of fossils and human evolution.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

George Busk was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, to a British family. He was educated in England and later studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. After completing his medical education, he joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon.

Career[edit | edit source]

Busk's career was marked by significant contributions to both medicine and natural history. As a naval surgeon, he served on the hospital ship HMS Dreadnought and later became the secretary of the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital.

Busk was an expert in marine biology, particularly in the study of Bryozoa, a group of aquatic invertebrate animals. He published numerous papers on the taxonomy and anatomy of these organisms. His work laid the foundation for future research in the field.
