George C. Nichopoulos

George C. Nichopoulos (October 29, 1927 – February 24, 2016), also known as "Dr. Nick", was an American physician of Greek descent. He is best known as the private doctor for Elvis Presley and his entourage, known as the 'Memphis Mafia'.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Nichopoulos was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina, to Greek immigrant parents. He attended medical school at Vanderbilt University, where he graduated in 1959.

Career[edit | edit source]

Nichopoulos served as a medic in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he started a private practice in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1967, he became the personal physician for Elvis Presley.

Controversy[edit | edit source]

Nichopoulos was controversial due to the high number of prescriptions he wrote for Elvis Presley. In the years leading up to Presley's death, Nichopoulos prescribed over 10,000 doses of amphetamines, barbiturates, narcotics, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, laxatives, and hormones. His license to practice medicine was suspended by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners in 1995.

Nichopoulos died on February 24, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee.
