Early Life[edit | edit source]

George Norton Wilcox was born on August 15, 1839, in Hilo, Hawaii, to missionary parents who had come to the islands from New England. He was educated in the local schools before traveling to the United States to attend Yale University, where he studied civil engineering. After completing his education, Wilcox returned to Hawaii to begin his career.

Career[edit | edit source]

Wilcox's career spanned various sectors, including agriculture, business, and politics. He is perhaps best known for his work in the sugar industry, where he transformed Grove Farm on Kauai into one of the most successful sugar plantations in Hawaii. His innovations in irrigation and labor management significantly improved sugar production techniques, contributing to the prosperity of the Hawaiian sugar industry.

In addition to his agricultural endeavors, Wilcox was also involved in politics. He served as a member of the Hawaiian Kingdom's legislature and played a role in the political developments leading up to the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Despite the turbulent political environment, Wilcox was respected for his moderate views and efforts to bridge the gap between the Hawaiian people and the haole (foreign) community.

Wilcox's legacy is also marked by his philanthropic efforts. He was a generous benefactor to various causes and institutions, including schools, hospitals, and public works projects. His contributions to education and healthcare had a lasting impact on the community, improving the quality of life for many Hawaiians.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

George Norton Wilcox passed away on January 21, 1933, but his influence on Hawaii remains. He is remembered as a visionary leader whose work in agriculture, politics, and philanthropy helped shape the modern landscape of the islands. His former estate, Grove Farm, is now a museum dedicated to preserving the history of Kauai and the sugar industry.
