George Robertson Dennis (April 8, 1822 – August 13, 1882) was an American physician and politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Maryland.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

George R. Dennis was born in Whitehaven, Maryland, on April 8, 1822. He attended the local schools and later graduated from Yale College in 1843. Following his graduation, Dennis studied medicine and earned his degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1845.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Dennis began practicing medicine in Somerset County, Maryland. He gained a reputation as a skilled physician and was well-respected in his community.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Dennis entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1854 and served until 1856. He later served in the Maryland State Senate from 1867 to 1871.

In 1873, Dennis was elected to the United States Senate, where he served one term from March 4, 1873, to March 3, 1879. During his tenure, he was known for his work on issues related to agriculture and public health.

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

After his term in the Senate, Dennis returned to his medical practice in Princess Anne, Maryland. He continued to be active in his community until his death on August 13, 1882.
