Maryland House of Delegates |
The Maryland House of Delegates is the lower house of the Maryland General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland. It consists of 141 members who are elected from 47 districts. Each district elects three delegates for a four-year term. The House of Delegates meets in the Maryland State House in Annapolis.
History[edit | edit source]
The Maryland House of Delegates was established in 1650 as the lower house of the Maryland General Assembly. It has undergone various changes in its structure and function over the centuries. Initially, it was composed of freemen of the province, but it later evolved to include elected representatives.
Leadership[edit | edit source]
The House of Delegates is presided over by the Speaker, who is elected by the members of the House. The current Speaker is Adrienne A. Jones, who has held the position since May 1, 2019. The Speaker is responsible for maintaining order, appointing committee members, and overseeing the legislative process.
Committees[edit | edit source]
The House of Delegates has several standing committees that handle various legislative functions. These include:
- Appropriations Committee
- Economic Matters Committee
- Environment and Transportation Committee
- Health and Government Operations Committee
- Judiciary Committee
- Ways and Means Committee
Legislative Process[edit | edit source]
Bills can be introduced in the House of Delegates by any member. Once introduced, a bill is assigned to a committee for review and recommendation. If approved by the committee, the bill is then debated and voted on by the full House. If passed, it moves to the Maryland Senate for consideration. If both houses approve the bill, it is sent to the Governor of Maryland for signature or veto.
Elections[edit | edit source]
Members of the House of Delegates are elected every four years during the general election. Each of the 47 legislative districts in Maryland elects three delegates. The most recent election was held on November 8, 2022, and the next election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
