George Upfold (1796 – 1872) was an influential American Episcopal bishop in the 19th century. He served as the first Bishop of Indiana and later as the Bishop of Pittsburgh.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

George Upfold was born on May 7, 1796, in New York City. He pursued his early education in local schools before attending Columbia University, where he graduated in 1814. Following his graduation, Upfold studied medicine and earned a degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1816.

Ordination and Ministry[edit | edit source]

Upfold was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1821 and as a priest in 1822. He initially served as a rector in various parishes in New York and Pennsylvania.

Bishop of Indiana[edit | edit source]

In 1849, George Upfold was elected as the first Bishop of Indiana. During his tenure, he focused on establishing and strengthening the Episcopal presence in the state. He was instrumental in founding several parishes and promoting religious education.

Bishop of Pittsburgh[edit | edit source]

In 1854, Upfold was elected as the Bishop of Pittsburgh, a position he held until his death in 1872. As bishop, he continued his efforts to expand the church's influence and was known for his pastoral care and administrative skills.

George Upfold's contributions to the Episcopal Church were significant, particularly in the states of Indiana and Pennsylvania. His leadership helped shape the church's development in these regions during a period of growth and change.

George Upfold passed away on August 26, 1872, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is remembered for his dedication to the church and his role in expanding its reach in the United States.
