George W. Corner
American physician, embryologist, and medical historian
George Washington Corner (December 12, 1889 – September 28, 1981) was an American physician, embryologist, and medical historian. He is best known for his work in reproductive biology and his role in the discovery of progesterone.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
George W. Corner was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in a family that valued education and scientific inquiry. He attended Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1910. He continued his studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, receiving his medical degree in 1913.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical education, Corner began his career as an instructor in anatomy at Johns Hopkins. He quickly developed an interest in embryology, which led him to conduct pioneering research in the field. In 1923, he joined the faculty at the University of Rochester, where he continued his research on the reproductive system.
Discovery of progesterone[edit | edit source]
Corner's most significant contribution to science was his work on the hormone progesterone. In collaboration with chemist Willard Myron Allen, Corner isolated and identified progesterone in 1933. This discovery was crucial for understanding the hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.
Later career and contributions[edit | edit source]
In 1940, Corner became the director of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Department of Embryology. He held this position until 1955, during which time he expanded the department's research scope and mentored many young scientists. After retiring from the Carnegie Institution, Corner served as a professor of medical history at the University of Pennsylvania.
Publications and legacy[edit | edit source]
Corner was a prolific writer, authoring numerous scientific papers and several books on embryology and medical history. His works include "The Hormones in Human Reproduction" and "Anatomy: A Regional Study of Human Structure." His contributions to science and medicine were recognized with numerous awards and honors, including election to the National Academy of Sciences.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
