George Washington University (GWU or GW) is a private research university located in Washington, D.C., United States. Established on February 9, 1821, as the Columbian College on the principle of reviving education in the nation's capital post the American Revolution. The university has since evolved into a comprehensive institution, offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs across various disciplines.

History

The inception of George Washington University was motivated by George Washington's vision of establishing a national institution dedicated to education in the capital. Although Washington himself had proposed the idea, it was not realized until after his death. The university was chartered by an act of Congress in 1821, under the name of Columbian College in the District of Columbia. Over the years, the college expanded its scope and was renamed George Washington University in 1904 to honor the first President of the United States.

GWU's main campus is located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., with additional campuses in the Mount Vernon area and the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.
