Georgetown is a historic neighborhood and a commercial and entertainment district located in Washington, D.C.. Founded in 1751 in the Province of Maryland, the port of Georgetown predated the establishment of the federal district and the City of Washington by 40 years. Georgetown is situated along the Potomac River and is known for its historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant cultural scene.

Georgetown was originally established as a tobacco port, facilitating trade and commerce in the region. The town was named after King George II of Great Britain. In 1789, Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States, was founded by John Carroll.

In 1871, the United States Congress created a new consolidated government for the entire District of Columbia, effectively merging Georgetown and the City of Washington. Georgetown retained its separate municipal status until 1895, when it was formally annexed by the City of Washington.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Georgetown is located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., bounded by the Potomac River to the south, Rock Creek to the east, and the neighborhoods of Burleith and Glover Park to the north. The main commercial corridors are M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, which are lined with shops, restaurants, and bars.
