Georgi Benkovski (1843 – 12 May 1876) was a Bulgarian revolutionary and a leading figure in the struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. His real name was Gavril Hlatev Gruev, but he is better known by his revolutionary pseudonym. Benkovski was a key organizer and leader of the April Uprising of 1876, which aimed at liberating Bulgaria from Ottoman domination. Despite its failure, the uprising was a significant event that eventually led to international intervention and the liberation of Bulgaria.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Georgi Benkovski was born in Koprivshtitsa, then part of the Ottoman Empire, in 1843. He received his early education in his hometown before moving to Plovdiv to continue his studies. Benkovski was deeply influenced by the ideas of the Bulgarian National Revival and the struggle for national liberation.

Revolutionary Activities[edit | edit source]

In the early 1870s, Benkovski became actively involved in the revolutionary movement against the Ottoman rule. He joined the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee (BRCC), where he worked closely with other prominent revolutionaries like Vasil Levski and Lyuben Karavelov. Benkovski's charisma, leadership skills, and dedication to the cause quickly made him one of the leading figures in the movement.

In 1876, Benkovski was appointed as the head of the Fourth Revolutionary District, which covered the region of Plovdiv. He played a crucial role in preparing the local population for the upcoming uprising, organizing committees, and securing arms and supplies.

The April Uprising[edit | edit source]

The April Uprising broke out on 20 April 1876. Benkovski led a group of revolutionaries in a series of battles against the Ottoman forces. Despite initial successes, the uprising was brutally suppressed by the Ottomans. Benkovski and his band fought valiantly but were eventually overwhelmed by the superior numbers and firepower of the Ottoman army.

On 12 May 1876, Georgi Benkovski was captured and executed by the Ottomans near the village of Batak. His death was a significant blow to the Bulgarian revolutionary movement, but his legacy lived on. The April Uprising, despite its failure, drew international attention to the Bulgarian cause and contributed to the eventual liberation of Bulgaria.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Georgi Benkovski is remembered as a hero of the Bulgarian liberation movement. His dedication, leadership, and sacrifice have made him a symbol of the struggle for national independence. Streets, schools, and other institutions in Bulgaria are named in his honor, and his life and work are commemorated annually on the anniversary of the April Uprising.
