Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is a borough and the county seat of Adams County, located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Known for its historical significance in the American Civil War, Gettysburg is most famous as the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the conflict. The town is also home to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his iconic Gettysburg Address.

The area that would become Gettysburg was settled in the early 18th century by immigrants of Scottish-Irish descent. The town of Gettysburg was founded in 1786 and named after General James Gettys, who laid out the town. However, it was the events of July 1-3, 1863, that would forever place Gettysburg in the annals of American history. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and Confederate forces, resulting in a decisive victory for the Union and marking the turning point of the Civil War.

Following the battle, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, during the dedication ceremony of the National Cemetery. This speech would become one of the most famous orations in American history, encapsulating the ideals of liberty and democracy.
