Gheorghe Cernei (born October 10, 1974, in Chișinău, Moldova) is a former Moldovan football midfielder and current football manager. He is known for his significant contributions to Moldovan football both as a player and as a coach.

Playing career[edit | edit source]

Gheorghe Cernei began his professional career with Zimbru Chișinău in 1992, where he played until 1997. During his time at Zimbru, he helped the team secure multiple Moldovan National Division titles. He then moved to FC Constructorul Chișinău, followed by stints at FC Nistru Otaci and FC Sheriff Tiraspol, where he continued to be a key player. Cernei concluded his playing career at FC Tiraspol in 2005.

Throughout his career, Cernei was known for his vision, passing ability, and leadership on the field. He earned a total of 20 caps for the Moldova national football team, scoring once.

Coaching career[edit | edit source]

After retiring from professional play, Cernei transitioned into coaching. He began his managerial career at FC Tiraspol, where he served from 2006 to 2008. He then managed several other Moldovan clubs, including FC Sfîntul Gheorghe, FC Costuleni, and FC Veris Chișinău. In 2015, he took over as the head coach of FC Dinamo-Auto Tiraspol, a position he held until 2017.

In 2018, Cernei returned to FC Sheriff Tiraspol, this time as an assistant manager, where he continues to contribute to the development of the club.

Gheorghe Cernei is regarded as one of the prominent figures in Moldovan football, having left a lasting impact both as a player and as a coach. His dedication to the sport and his achievements have made him a respected figure in the Moldovan football community.
