Gheorghe Mureșan (born February 14, 1971) is a Romanian retired professional basketball player. Known for his exceptional height, standing at 7 feet 7 inches (2.31 m), Mureșan is one of the tallest players ever to have played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). His career in the NBA spanned from 1993 to 2000, during which he played for the Washington Bullets and the New Jersey Nets. Mureșan's size, combined with his skill set, made him a notable figure in professional basketball.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Gheorghe Mureșan was born in Tritenii de Jos, Cluj County, Romania. His towering height is attributed to a pituitary gland disorder. Despite his height, Mureșan was not initially interested in basketball. It was not until his late teens that he started playing the sport, demonstrating a natural talent that quickly caught the attention of professional teams in Europe.

Career[edit | edit source]

European Basketball[edit | edit source]

Before moving to the United States, Mureșan had a successful career in European basketball. He played for Universitatea Cluj in the Romanian Basketball Division A, where his performance earned him recognition and paved the way for his move to the NBA.

NBA Career[edit | edit source]

Mureșan's best season came in the 1995-1996 season when he was named the NBA's Most Improved Player. During this season, he averaged 14.5 points per game, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks.

Injuries plagued much of Mureșan's career, limiting his playtime and effectiveness on the court. Despite these challenges, he remained a fan favorite for his gentle demeanor and unique skill set for a player of his size.

After leaving the NBA, Mureșan played briefly in Europe before retiring from professional basketball.
