Ghulam Nabi Azad
Ghulam Nabi Azad (born 7 March 1949) is an Indian politician from the Indian National Congress party. He has served in various capacities in the government of India and the Indian National Congress party, including as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Parliamentary Affairs, and as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ghulam Nabi Azad was born in Soti, a village in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Science from G.G.M. Science College in Jammu and later pursued a Master's degree in Zoology from University of Kashmir, Srinagar.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Azad's political career began in the early 1970s when he joined the Indian National Congress. His adeptness at grassroots politics and his ability to connect with the people quickly propelled him through the ranks of the party.
Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir[edit | edit source]
In November 2005, Azad became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, a position he held until July 2008. His tenure was marked by efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the region, amidst the ongoing conflict.
Union Minister[edit | edit source]
Azad has held several portfolios as a Union Minister. Notably, he served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare from May 2009 to October 2014. During his tenure, he initiated several health reforms and programs aimed at improving the healthcare infrastructure and services in India. He also served as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and as the Minister of Urban Development.

As the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Azad played a pivotal role in the launch of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), aimed at providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to the rural population.
