Glare (vision)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Glare (vision)

Glare is a visual sensation caused by excessive and uncontrolled brightness. It can be caused by any source of light, whether it's artificial or natural, such as the sun. Glare is not only uncomfortable, but it can also be dangerous as it can impair one's vision, especially while driving, flying, or operating heavy machinery.

Types of Glare[edit | edit source]

There are three types of glare: Disability glare, Discomfort glare, and Dazzling glare.

Disability Glare[edit | edit source]

Disability glare is a type of glare that reduces visibility of objects without necessarily causing discomfort. This can seriously impair tasks that require visual accuracy, such as reading or driving.

Discomfort Glare[edit | edit source]

Discomfort glare, on the other hand, causes an instinctive desire to look away from a bright light source or difficulty in seeing a task. This type of glare does not necessarily decrease one's visual performance, but it can cause discomfort.

Dazzling Glare[edit | edit source]

Dazzling glare is a type of glare that occurs when a light source directly in the field of vision is significantly brighter than the ambient light level. This can cause temporary blindness or disability.

Causes of Glare[edit | edit source]

Glare can be caused by several factors, including direct light, reflected light, and excessive contrast between dark and light areas. It can also be caused by certain medical conditions, such as cataracts or corneal diseases.

Prevention and Control of Glare[edit | edit source]

There are several ways to prevent and control glare. These include using anti-glare screens on computers and other digital devices, wearing sunglasses with anti-reflective coating, and adjusting the lighting in one's environment.
