Gleditsia sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese honey locust, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae. It is native to China and is widely cultivated for its medicinal properties and ornamental value.
Description[edit | edit source]
Gleditsia sinensis is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 25 meters in height. The tree has a broad, spreading crown and a trunk that can reach up to 1 meter in diameter. The bark is grayish-brown and becomes deeply fissured with age. The leaves are pinnately compound, with 10-20 pairs of leaflets that are ovate to lanceolate in shape. The flowers are small, greenish-yellow, and appear in late spring. The fruit is a long, twisted pod that can be up to 40 cm in length, containing several seeds.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Gleditsia sinensis is typically found in mixed forests, along riverbanks, and in open fields. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. The tree is also drought-tolerant and can withstand urban pollution, making it a popular choice for urban landscaping.
