Glen William Bell Jr. (September 3, 1923 – January 16, 2010) was an American entrepreneur best known for founding the fast-food chain Taco Bell. Born in Lynwood, California, Bell's foray into the restaurant business began with a hot dog stand in 1946. His journey into the fast-food industry led to the creation of Taco Bell in 1962, which would grow to become one of the largest and most recognized Mexican fast-food chains globally.

Early Life

Glen Bell was born in Lynwood, California, and served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After his service, he ventured into the restaurant business, opening his first establishment, Bell's Drive-In, in San Bernardino, California, in 1948.

Career

Bell's initial business was a hot dog stand, but he soon recognized the potential in offering Mexican-style food to a broader American audience. This insight led him to open a series of restaurants, including Taco-Tia and El Taco, before finally establishing the first Taco Bell in Downey, California, in 1962. Taco Bell's concept of quick-service Mexican food was innovative for its time and quickly gained popularity.

Bell's approach to fast food was revolutionary, focusing on a simplified menu, efficient service, and affordable prices. This model not only contributed to the success of Taco Bell but also influenced the fast-food industry at large. Under Bell's leadership, Taco Bell expanded rapidly, and by the time he sold the chain to PepsiCo in 1978, there were more than 868 restaurants.
