Glen Garioch distillery
Glen Garioch Distillery is a whisky distillery located in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, having been established in 1797. The distillery is known for producing single malt Scotch whisky that is characteristic of the Highland whisky region, offering a range of expressions that vary in age and cask type.
History[edit | edit source]
The Glen Garioch Distillery was founded by the Manson brothers, John and Alexander, in the late 18th century. The distillery's location in Oldmeldrum was strategically chosen due to the abundance of barley produced in the Vale of Garioch, often referred to as the 'Granary of Aberdeenshire', and its access to pure spring water from the surrounding hills. Over the centuries, Glen Garioch has experienced periods of closure and revival, reflecting the fluctuating fortunes of the Scotch whisky industry. Notably, the distillery was mothballed in 1968 but was reopened in 1973 under the ownership of Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, which is now part of the Japanese company Suntory.
Production[edit | edit source]
Glen Garioch's production process is traditional, utilizing malted barley, yeast, and water as its primary ingredients. The distillery had historically malted its own barley, but this practice was discontinued in the 1990s. Water for the whisky production is sourced from the Silent Spring, which is reputed for its purity and consistent flow. The distillation process takes place in copper pot stills, and the whisky is aged in oak casks, including bourbon and sherry casks, which contribute to the final flavor profile of the whisky.
Products[edit | edit source]
Glen Garioch produces a range of single malt Scotch whiskies, including age-statement expressions such as the 12-year-old, and non-age statement whiskies that focus on the cask influence, such as the Virgin Oak release. The distillery is also known for its limited edition and vintage releases, which are highly sought after by whisky enthusiasts.
Visitor Centre[edit | edit source]
The Glen Garioch Distillery operates a visitor centre, offering tours and tastings to the public. The tours provide insight into the distillery's history, production process, and the opportunity to sample various expressions of Glen Garioch whisky. The visitor centre is a popular attraction for whisky lovers and tourists exploring Scotland's rich whisky heritage.
In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]
While not as prominently featured in popular culture as some other distilleries, Glen Garioch's whiskies have been appreciated by connoisseurs and featured in various whisky publications and tasting events, contributing to the distillery's reputation for quality and craftsmanship.
