Glenflagler distillery
Glenflagler Distillery was a Scottish whisky distillery located in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The distillery was operational from 1965 to 1985, producing both malt and grain whisky under the Glenflagler, Killyloch, and Islebrae brand names.
History[edit | edit source]
The Glenflagler Distillery was established in 1965 by the Inver House Distillers company, a subsidiary of Publicker Industries of Philadelphia, United States. The distillery was built on the site of a former brewery in Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The distillery was unique in that it was one of the few distilleries in Scotland to produce both malt and grain whisky.
The distillery produced whisky under three brand names: Glenflagler, Killyloch, and Islebrae. Glenflagler was a single malt whisky, while Killyloch and Islebrae were single grain whiskies. The distillery was known for its innovative production methods, including the use of a Lauter tun, a type of mash tun that is more commonly used in brewing beer.
Despite its innovative production methods, the Glenflagler Distillery struggled to compete in the whisky market. The distillery ceased production in 1985 and was subsequently demolished. Today, bottles of Glenflagler, Killyloch, and Islebrae whisky are considered rare and are highly sought after by whisky collectors.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The Glenflagler Distillery is remembered for its unique production methods and its contribution to the Scottish whisky industry. The distillery's use of a Lauter tun in whisky production was innovative for its time and has since been adopted by other distilleries. The distillery's whiskies, particularly Glenflagler, are considered to be of high quality and are highly prized by whisky enthusiasts.
