Protective eyewear

Goggles are forms of protective eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates, water, or chemicals from striking the eyes. They are used in chemistry laboratories, woodworking, swimming, and various sports. Goggles are often worn when using power tools such as drills or chainsaws to prevent flying particles from damaging the eyes.

Types of Goggles[edit | edit source]

Goggles come in various types, each designed for specific purposes:

Safety Goggles[edit | edit source]

Safety goggles are designed to protect the eyes from hazardous substances and are commonly used in laboratories and construction sites. They are typically made from durable materials like polycarbonate and often feature anti-fog coatings.

Swimming Goggles[edit | edit source]

Swimming goggles are used to protect the eyes from chlorinated water in swimming pools and to improve underwater vision. They are designed to be watertight and are often adjustable to fit different head sizes.

Ski Goggles[edit | edit source]

Ski goggles are used in winter sports to protect the eyes from snow, wind, and UV radiation. They often have tinted lenses to reduce glare and improve visibility in bright conditions.

Aviator Goggles[edit | edit source]

Aviator goggles were originally designed for pilots to protect their eyes from wind and debris while flying. They are now often used in motorcycling and other high-speed activities.

History[edit | edit source]

The use of goggles dates back to ancient times when Inuit people used flattened walrus ivory with narrow slits to protect their eyes from the harsh glare of the sun on snow. Modern goggles were developed in the early 20th century with the advent of new materials and manufacturing techniques.

Design and Features[edit | edit source]

Goggles are designed to fit snugly against the face to provide a seal that prevents contaminants from entering. They often feature adjustable straps and cushioned frames for comfort. Some goggles are equipped with ventilation systems to reduce fogging, while others have interchangeable lenses for different lighting conditions.
