Golden LEAF Foundation
Golden LEAF Foundation
The Golden LEAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in North Carolina, United States. It was established in 1999 to manage funds from the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) with cigarette manufacturers. The foundation's primary mission is to promote the economic well-being of North Carolinians, particularly in the state's rural and economically distressed communities.
History[edit | edit source]
The Golden LEAF Foundation was created as a result of the MSA, which was an agreement between the four largest tobacco companies in the United States and 46 states, including North Carolina. The settlement aimed to recover healthcare costs associated with treating smoking-related illnesses. North Carolina's share of the settlement funds was allocated to the Golden LEAF Foundation to support economic development and diversification in areas historically dependent on tobacco farming.
