Golden Delicious Apple

The Golden Delicious is a cultivar of apple with a yellow color, not to be confused with the Red Delicious. The Golden Delicious, which is often referred to as the yellow apple, is not closely related to the Red Delicious.

History[edit | edit source]

The Golden Delicious was originally discovered in the early 20th century in West Virginia, USA. It was designated as the official state fruit of West Virginia by a Senate resolution on February 20, 1995. The original tree was found on the Mullins' family farm in Clay County, West Virginia, United States and was locally known as Mullin's Yellow Seedling and Annit apple.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Golden Delicious apples are firm, crisp, and white-fleshed. These apples have a balanced sweet-tart aromatic flavor, which has been described as honeyed. The size and shape are uniform, with the apple having a similar shape to the Red Delicious.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Golden Delicious apples are self-fertile, which means they can pollinate themselves and do not need to be planted in proximity to other apple trees to bear fruit. They are also used as a pollinator for other apple cultivars. They are adaptable to a variety of planting sites, and they mature in late September to mid-October.

Nutritional Value[edit | edit source]

Golden Delicious apples are a good source of soluble fiber, which has been proven to help lower cholesterol, control weight, and regulate blood sugar. They also contain vitamins A and C, as well as a trace amount of iron, most of which is located in their skin.

Culinary Uses[edit | edit source]

Golden Delicious apples are suitable for many culinary uses, including salad, apple butter, apple sauce, and pies. They are also good for freezing and making apple cider.
