Gordon F. Derner (1915–1983) was a prominent American psychologist known for his extensive contributions to the field. Notably, he served as the dean of the Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, which was later renamed in his honor as the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology.[1]

Derner was born on April 9, 1915, in Buffalo, New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at the State University at Buffalo, now known as the University at Buffalo. Following this, Derner earned both a master's degree and a doctorate from Columbia University, cementing his academic foundation in psychology.[2]

Gordon F. Derner made substantial contributions to the field of psychology throughout his career. His most notable role was as the dean of the Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. Under his leadership, the Institute grew and developed significantly, leading to its subsequent renaming as the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology after his passing.
In 1982, Derner was awarded the prestigious Bruno Klopfer Award. This honor is given annually by the Society for Personality Assessment to individuals who have made long-standing and substantial contributions to the field of personality assessment.[3]
