Gorillas is a Berlin-based startup company that specializes in grocery delivery. The company was founded in 2020 by Kagan Sümer and Jörg Kattner. Gorillas operates in several cities across Europe and has expanded to the United States.

Gorillas was founded in May 2020 by Kagan Sümer and Jörg Kattner. The company's business model is based on delivering groceries within an average of 10 minutes. The company raised $44 million in a Series A funding round in December 2020, and $290 million in a Series B funding round in March 2021, reaching a valuation of over $1 billion and achieving unicorn status.

Gorillas operates a network of micro fulfillment centers in the cities where it operates. These centers stock a range of around 2,000 products, and customers can order groceries via the Gorillas app. The company employs its own riders, who deliver orders by bike. Gorillas aims to provide a faster and more convenient alternative to traditional supermarkets.

After launching in Berlin, Gorillas expanded to other German cities including Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne. The company also launched in other European cities such as Amsterdam, London, and Paris. In June 2021, Gorillas launched in the United States, starting with New York City.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Gorillas has faced criticism for its treatment of workers, with riders protesting in Berlin in March 2021 over pay and working conditions. The company has also faced scrutiny over its rapid expansion and high burn rate.
