The city is named after Gothenburg, Sweden, and is noted for its Swedish heritage. Gothenburg, NE is a small city with a population of approximately 3,500 people.

- Gothenburg was platted in 1882 when the Union Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. The city was named after the Swedish city of Gothenburg, in honor of the Swedish heritage of many of the local settlers.
