Government of Gujarat
Government of Gujarat is the governing authority for the Indian state of Gujarat. It is composed of an executive, led by the Governor of Gujarat, a judiciary, and a legislative branch.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The structure of the Government of Gujarat is based on the Constitution of India. It is structured in accordance with the principles of the parliamentary system of government, where the Governor acts as the nominal head, while the real power is held by the Chief Minister and their Council of Ministers.
Executive[edit | edit source]
The executive branch is headed by the Governor, who is appointed by the President of India on the advice of the central government. The Chief Minister, who holds the real executive power, is elected by the members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister is supported by the Council of Ministers, which consists of Cabinet Ministers and junior Ministers.
Legislature[edit | edit source]
The Gujarat Legislative Assembly is a unicameral body that consists of elected members who legislate for the state. The assembly is elected for a five-year term, and its primary function is to pass laws and budgets for the state. The Gujarat Legislative Council, or the upper house, was abolished in 1960.
Judiciary[edit | edit source]
The judiciary in Gujarat is headed by the Gujarat High Court, which is located in Ahmedabad. The judiciary ensures the administration of justice in the state, protects the rights of the citizens, and interprets the constitution. Lower courts in the hierarchy include district courts and other subordinate courts.
Administration[edit | edit source]
Gujarat is administratively divided into districts, which are further subdivided into talukas. Each district is governed by a District Collector, who is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. The districts are responsible for local administration and governance.
