The Governor General of Canada (French: Gouverneur général du Canada) is the federal viceregal representative of the Canadian monarch, currently Charles III. The Governor General is appointed by the Monarch of Canada on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada. The role of the Governor General is largely ceremonial, but they also have important constitutional and representational duties.

History[edit | edit source]

The position of Governor General dates back to the early days of New France, with the first Governor General being Samuel de Champlain in 1627. After the British conquest of New France, the role continued under British rule. Following the Confederation of Canada in 1867, the Governor General became the representative of the British monarch in Canada. Over time, the role evolved to represent the Canadian monarch, reflecting Canada's status as an independent nation within the Commonwealth of Nations.

The official residence of the Governor General is Rideau Hall in Ottawa. A secondary residence, La Citadelle, is located in Quebec City.

Appointment[edit | edit source]

The Governor General is appointed by the Monarch of Canada on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada. The term length is at the monarch's pleasure, typically lasting about five years.
