Greater Houston

Greater Houston is a metropolitan area defined by the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan statistical area (MSA), which is located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the fifth-most populous metropolitan area in the United States and encompasses nine counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller.

Greater Houston covers an area of approximately 10,062 square miles (26,060 km²), making it larger than the state of New Jersey. The region is characterized by its flat topography and is intersected by several major rivers, including the Brazos River, San Jacinto River, and Trinity River.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Greater Houston is diverse, with key industries including energy, aerospace, biomedical research, and manufacturing. The region is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, and the Port of Houston, one of the busiest ports in the United States.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 United States Census, the Greater Houston area had a population of over 7 million people. The region is known for its ethnic and cultural diversity, with significant populations of Hispanic, African American, Asian American, and White residents.

Greater Houston is served by numerous school districts, including the Houston Independent School District, the largest in Texas. The region is also home to several major universities, such as Rice University, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University.

The transportation infrastructure in Greater Houston includes an extensive network of highways, such as Interstate 10, Interstate 45, and Interstate 69. Public transportation is provided by the METRO, which operates bus and light rail services.

Greater Houston is a cultural hub, featuring numerous museums, theaters, and music venues. The Houston Museum District is home to 19 museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The region also hosts several annual events, such as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Houston International Festival.

The region is home to several professional sports teams, including the Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Rockets (NBA), and Houston Texans (NFL). The area also boasts numerous collegiate sports programs and facilities.
