Harris County, Texas is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 United States Census, it is the most populous county in Texas and the third-most populous in the United States, with a population of approximately 4.7 million people. Harris County is part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area and contains the city of Houston, which is the county seat and largest city.

Harris County was founded in 1836 and was originally named Harrisburg County after John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the area. The name was shortened to Harris County in 1839. The county has a rich history, playing a significant role in the Texas Revolution, the establishment of the Republic of Texas, and the growth of the state's oil and gas industry in the early 20th century.
