Green Fins

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Green Fins is an international initiative developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Reef-World Foundation to promote sustainable practices within the marine tourism industry. The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of scuba diving and snorkeling on coral reefs around the world.

History[edit | edit source]

Green Fins was first established in 2004 by the UNEP and the Reef-World Foundation. The initiative was initially piloted in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, three countries with significant marine tourism industries and diverse coral reef ecosystems.

Approach[edit | edit source]

Green Fins adopts a unique approach to marine conservation by directly engaging with the diving and snorkeling industry. The initiative provides guidelines and resources for dive operators to improve their environmental practices, such as reducing their use of single-use plastics, promoting responsible diving behaviors among their customers, and minimizing their impact on marine ecosystems.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its inception, Green Fins has expanded to several other countries and has been adopted by hundreds of dive operators worldwide. The initiative has been successful in raising awareness about the environmental impact of marine tourism and promoting sustainable practices within the industry.
