Greta Celeste Gerwig (born August 4, 1983) is an American actress, screenwriter, and director. She first garnered attention after working on and appearing in several Mumblecore films. She has since transitioned into mainstream success, both in front of and behind the camera.

Greta Gerwig was born in Sacramento, California. She attended St. Francis High School, an all-girls Catholic school, and later graduated from Barnard College with a degree in English and philosophy.

Early work[edit | edit source]
Gerwig's early work includes collaborations with Joe Swanberg on films such as Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007) and Nights and Weekends (2008). These films are part of the Mumblecore movement, characterized by low-budget production and naturalistic acting.

Gerwig's breakthrough came with her role in Greenberg (2010), directed by Noah Baumbach. This collaboration led to further projects, including Frances Ha (2012), for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination.
