Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg (born 3 January 2003) is a Swedish environmental activist who is internationally known for her efforts to combat climate change. She first gained recognition for her school strike for climate in August 2018, which inspired students across the globe to participate in similar protests.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Greta Thunberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to opera singer Malena Ernman and actor Svante Thunberg. She is the granddaughter of actor and director Olof Thunberg. Greta was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and selective mutism, which she has described as her "superpower" in her activism.
Activism[edit | edit source]
In August 2018, at the age of 15, Thunberg began spending her school days outside the Swedish Parliament to call for stronger action on global warming by holding up a sign reading "Skolstrejk för klimatet" (School strike for climate). Her protest gained worldwide attention, and she began speaking at high-profile events across the globe, including the United Nations Climate Change Conference and the World Economic Forum.
Thunberg's activism has been credited with raising global awareness of the risks posed by climate change and with holding politicians to account for their lack of action on the climate crisis. She has received numerous honors and awards, including being named Time Person of the Year in 2019.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Thunberg's influence has led to the creation of the Fridays for Future movement, where students around the world skip school on Fridays to demand action on climate change. Her speeches and actions have inspired millions of people to join the fight against climate change and have brought significant attention to the issue.
Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]
While Thunberg has been widely praised for her activism, she has also faced criticism and backlash from some political figures and commentators who disagree with her views or methods. Despite this, she continues to be a prominent figure in the environmental movement.
