Grizell Steevens (1653–1746) was an Irish philanthropist and benefactor, best known for her contributions to the establishment of Dr Steevens' Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Grizell Steevens was born in 1653, the daughter of Dr. Richard Steevens, a prominent physician in Dublin. She grew up in a well-to-do family and was educated in the social and cultural norms of the time.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Grizell Steevens is most renowned for her charitable work, particularly her role in the founding of Dr Steevens' Hospital. After the death of her brother, Dr. Richard Steevens, in 1710, Grizell inherited a substantial fortune. She decided to use this inheritance to fulfill her brother's wish of establishing a hospital for the poor.

In 1720, Grizell Steevens began the construction of Dr Steevens' Hospital, which was completed in 1733. The hospital was one of the first of its kind in Dublin and provided medical care to the impoverished population of the city. Grizell Steevens managed the hospital and ensured it operated according to her brother's vision. The hospital continued to serve the community for many years and became a significant institution in Dublin's medical history.
