Guayana Region

Guayana Region is a region in the southeastern part of Venezuela. It is named after the Guiana Shield, an ancient geological formation that covers this vast area. The region is known for its unique natural landscapes, including the Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, and the Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Guayana Region is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Brazil to the south, Guyana to the east, and the Orinoco River to the west. It is the largest region in Venezuela, covering about 45% of the country's total land area. The region is largely covered by rainforest and includes the Guiana Highlands, a series of plateaus and tepuis.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of the Guayana Region is largely based on natural resources. It is home to the Orinoco Mining Arc, where significant reserves of gold, diamonds, and other minerals are found. The region also has large reserves of bauxite and iron ore, and it is a major producer of aluminum and steel. In addition, the Guayana Region is an important center for hydroelectric power, with the Guri Dam being one of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world.

The Guayana Region is home to several indigenous groups, including the Pemon, Yekuana, and Sanema. These groups have a rich cultural heritage, with traditions and practices that have been passed down for generations. The region is also known for its traditional music and dance, such as the joropo, a popular folk dance in Venezuela.

The Guayana Region is rich in biodiversity, with a wide variety of plant and animal species. The region's rainforests are home to numerous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects. Notable species include the jaguar, giant anteater, harpy eagle, and Amazon river dolphin. The region is also known for its unique flora, including the carnivorous plants that grow on the tepuis.
