Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil ), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil ), is the largest country in both South America and Latin America. It is the world's fifth-largest country by area and the sixth-most populous. The capital is Brasília, and the largest city is São Paulo. The federation is composed of the union of 26 states and the Federal District.

The history of Brazil begins with indigenous peoples in Brazil. The country was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until its independence in 1822. Brazil became a empire in 1822 and a republic in 1889. The country has seen several political and economic changes, including a period of military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Brazil occupies a large area along the eastern coast of South America and includes much of the continent's interior. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and it shares borders with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. The Amazon Rainforest, the world's largest tropical rainforest, is located in the northern part of the country.

Brazil has a mixed economy with abundant natural resources. It is the largest producer of coffee in the world. The country has a diverse industrial base, including automobiles, steel, petrochemicals, and aviation. The São Paulo Stock Exchange is the largest in Latin America.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Brazil is a multiracial society with a population of over 213 million people. The official language is Portuguese, and the country is known for its cultural diversity. Major cities include Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Fortaleza.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Brazilian culture is a melting pot of influences from Europe, Africa, and indigenous peoples. The country is famous for its Carnival festival, samba music, and football. Brazilian cuisine varies by region but includes staples such as feijoada and pão de queijo.

Government and Politics[edit | edit source]

Brazil is a federal republic with a presidential system. The President is both the head of state and the head of government. The country has a multi-party system, and the National Congress of Brazil is a bicameral legislature.

Education and Health[edit | edit source]

Brazil has a large public education system, with free education available at all levels. The country also has a public healthcare system known as the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), which provides free healthcare to all citizens.
