Gundersen flap

Gundersen flap is a surgical procedure used in the treatment of corneal ulcers and perforations. Named after Dr. Trygve Gundersen, an ophthalmologist who first described the technique, the Gundersen flap involves the use of conjunctival tissue to cover and protect the cornea.

Procedure

The Gundersen flap procedure begins with the surgeon making an incision in the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye. This incision is made close to the limbus, the border between the cornea and the sclera. The surgeon then carefully lifts the conjunctiva and stretches it over the cornea, suturing it in place. This creates a protective barrier over the cornea, allowing it to heal.

Indications

The Gundersen flap is typically used in cases where the cornea has been severely damaged, such as in the case of corneal ulcers or perforations. It may also be used in cases where the cornea has become thin and at risk of perforation. The procedure can help to prevent further damage to the cornea and reduce the risk of vision loss.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, the Gundersen flap carries some risks. These may include infection, bleeding, and reaction to the anesthesia. There is also a risk that the flap may not adhere properly to the cornea, or that the cornea may not heal as expected. In some cases, additional surgery may be required.
