HMS Maori (F24) was a Tribal-class destroyer of the Royal Navy named after the Māori people of New Zealand. Launched in 1937, she played a significant role during World War II, participating in numerous operations and battles across the European and Mediterranean theatres.

Design and Description[edit | edit source]

The Tribal-class destroyers were designed in the mid-1930s to counter the large destroyers being built abroad. HMS Maori, with a displacement of 1,850 tons, was armed with eight 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns in four twin turrets, and had anti-aircraft capabilities with a mix of 2-pounder and 0.5-inch AA guns. She was also equipped with torpedo tubes and had the capacity to lay mines. The ship was powered by two Parsons geared steam turbines, giving her a speed of up to 36 knots.

Service History[edit | edit source]

HMS Maori was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1938. At the outbreak of World War II, she was assigned to the Home Fleet and participated in the Norwegian Campaign. Her early war service included escort duties and operations to intercept German warships.

In 1941, Maori was transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet, where she was actively involved in the Battle of Cape Matapan and the Crete Campaign. She also took part in the defense of Malta, a critical point for Allied shipping in the Mediterranean.

One of her most notable actions occurred in February 1942, when Maori was moored in Valletta Harbour, Malta. She was bombed by German aircraft and sank. The wreck was later raised and scuttled off Malta's coast in 1945.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The wreck of HMS Maori is now a popular dive site in Malta, attracting divers from around the world. It lies at a relatively shallow depth, making it accessible to divers of various skill levels. The site serves as a poignant reminder of the ship's service and sacrifice, as well as the broader naval history of World War II.
