HOXB13
HOXB13 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HOXB13 gene. This gene is part of the homeobox gene family, which are critical in the formation and development of the body plan of an organism. The HOXB13 gene is specifically involved in the development of the prostate and hair follicles.
Function[edit | edit source]
The HOXB13 gene provides instructions for making a protein that plays a crucial role in the development of tissues and organs during embryonic development. This protein is a transcription factor, which means it attaches (binds) to specific regions of DNA and helps control the activity of particular genes.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the HOXB13 gene have been associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. A specific mutation in this gene, known as G84E, has been found to significantly increase the risk of hereditary prostate cancer. This mutation changes a single protein building block (amino acid) in the HOXB13 protein, which likely alters the protein's function.
