Haaretz (Hebrew: הארץ, "The Land") is one of the oldest and most influential daily newspapers in Israel. Founded in 1918, it is known for its liberal stance on domestic and international issues, and its high-quality journalism. Haaretz is published in both Hebrew and English, with the English edition available online and in print.
History[edit | edit source]
Haaretz was established in 1918 in Jerusalem during the British Mandate for Palestine. It was initially a military newspaper for the British forces, but soon transitioned into a civilian publication. In 1937, the newspaper was acquired by Zalman Schocken, a German-Jewish publisher, and moved its headquarters to Tel Aviv.
Under the Schocken family's ownership, Haaretz became known for its intellectual rigor and commitment to liberal values. The newspaper has been a platform for some of Israel's most prominent writers and thinkers, including Amos Oz and David Grossman.
Editorial Stance[edit | edit source]
Haaretz is often described as left-leaning, advocating for peace and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is critical of Israeli government policies that it perceives as undermining democracy and human rights. The newspaper's editorial board supports civil liberties, minority rights, and social justice.
Content and Features[edit | edit source]
Haaretz covers a wide range of topics, including politics, culture, economics, and international affairs. It is known for its investigative journalism and in-depth analysis. The English edition of Haaretz is particularly popular among international readers and is often cited by foreign media.
Notable Sections[edit | edit source]
- Opinion and Editorials: Features commentary from leading Israeli and international writers.
- Culture and Arts: Covers Israeli and global cultural events, including literature, film, and art.
- Business and Economy: Provides analysis of Israeli and global economic trends.
Digital Presence[edit | edit source]
Haaretz has a significant online presence, with a website that offers both free and subscription-based content. The digital edition includes multimedia features such as videos and podcasts, enhancing the reader's experience.
Criticism and Controversies[edit | edit source]
Haaretz has faced criticism from various quarters, particularly from right-wing groups in Israel who accuse it of being overly critical of the Israeli government and military. Despite this, it remains a respected source of news and analysis.
