From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hair disorder refers to a broad category of conditions that affect the hair follicle, the part of the skin that grows hair. Hair disorders can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (developed after birth). They can affect the scalp or other parts of the body where hair grows.

Types of Hair Disorders[edit | edit source]

There are several types of hair disorders, including:

  • Alopecia: This is a general term for hair loss. Alopecia can occur in many forms, from a small patch of hair loss to complete baldness. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and autoimmune disorders.
  • Hirsutism: This condition is characterized by excessive hair growth in areas where hair is usually minimal or absent, such as the face and chest in women. It is often caused by an excess of male hormones.
  • Telogen effluvium: This is a temporary form of hair loss that usually occurs after a major stress event, such as surgery, childbirth, or severe illness.
  • Tinea capitis: Also known as ringworm of the scalp, this is a fungal infection that causes hair loss and scalp inflammation.

Causes of Hair Disorders[edit | edit source]

Hair disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Genetics: Many hair disorders, such as certain forms of alopecia, are hereditary.
  • Hormonal changes: Changes in hormone levels can cause hair disorders. For example, hirsutism is often caused by an excess of male hormones.
  • Autoimmune disorders: Some hair disorders, such as alopecia areata, are caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles.
  • Infections: Infections, such as tinea capitis, can cause hair loss and scalp inflammation.

Treatment of Hair Disorders[edit | edit source]

Treatment for hair disorders depends on the cause of the condition. Options may include:

  • Medication: Certain medications can help to slow hair loss or stimulate hair growth.
  • Surgery: In some cases, hair transplant surgery may be an option.
  • Lifestyle changes: In some cases, changes to diet and stress management techniques can help to improve hair health.
