Hakushu distillery
Hakushu Distillery is a Japanese whisky distillery owned by Suntory, one of the largest and most popular whisky producers in Japan. It is located in the Japanese Alps, specifically in the town of Hakushu, Yamanashi Prefecture. The distillery was established in 1973 and is known for its unique production methods and high-quality whisky products.
History[edit | edit source]
The Hakushu Distillery was established by Keizo Saji, the second master blender of Suntory, in 1973. Saji was inspired by the pristine nature of the Japanese Alps and decided to build the distillery in the forest of Hakushu. The distillery was designed to be in harmony with the surrounding environment, and it is often referred to as the "forest distillery".
Production[edit | edit source]
The Hakushu Distillery uses a variety of production methods to create a wide range of whisky flavors. The distillery has six pairs of pot stills of different shapes and sizes, which allows for a diverse range of distillation methods. The distillery also uses a variety of yeast strains and barrel types for aging, which further contributes to the complexity of their whiskies.
The distillery is known for its use of lightly-peated and heavily-peated barley in the production of its whiskies. The peat used at Hakushu is sourced from the surrounding area, which gives the whisky a unique, local flavor profile.
Products[edit | edit source]
The Hakushu Distillery produces a range of whiskies, including the Hakushu Single Malt, Hakushu 12 Year Old, and Hakushu 18 Year Old. These whiskies are known for their fresh, lightly peated, and slightly fruity flavor profiles.
Tourism[edit | edit source]
The Hakushu Distillery is open to the public for tours. Visitors can learn about the whisky production process, taste different whiskies, and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the distillery.
